A-bombed Gravestone
Overview: What is it?
At that time, this area was occupied by a large temple called Jisenji Temple. It was located only 200 meters from the hypocenter, resulting in the complete destruction of all its buildings, and the death of everyone present, including the chief priest.
The Story & Significance
The powerful blast wave blew away many of the gravestones located within the temple grounds. This particular grave, which remains in the state it was in at the time of the bombing, belongs to Okamoto Kunai, a chief retainer (karo) of the Asano clan of the Hiroshima Domain. Because the surrounding area was filled in (mounded) to construct the park after the war, the grave now sits in a recessed location, but its height is said to represent the ground level at the time of the bombing.
Location
After crossing the Aioi Bridge into the park, walk along the riverbank, and you will see it on your left. You can get there with a brief walk from the Children’s Peace Monument, but since it’s located a bit off the main path, you might walk right past it.
