Access to Miyajima
Accessing Miyajima from central Hiroshima is simple and scenic. Most visitors travel via Miyajimaguchi, the gateway to the island, where you can catch a 10-minute ferry ride across the sea.
From Hiroshima Station to Miyajimaguchi
JR Route (Recommended for speed)
- Route: Take the JR Sanyo Line from Hiroshima Station to Miyajimaguchi Station.
- Time/Cost: Approx. 25-30 minutes / ¥420.
- Note: If you have a Japan Rail Pass, this route and the JR Ferry are covered.
Hiroden Streetcar (For a local experience)
- Route: Take Line #2 from central Hiroshima (Hatchobori/Kamiya-cho) to Hiroden Miyajimaguchi.
- Time/Cost: Approx. 60-70 minutes / ¥270.
- Note: It takes longer, but it's a great way to see the local neighborhoods and costs less.
Ferry to the Island
Two Ferry Operators
- JR Miyajima Ferry: Known for its "Great Torii Route," which sails closer to the Torii gate on trips heading to the island.
- Miyajima Matsudai Kisen: The 1,000-yen "1-Day Streetcar & Ferry Pass" is valid.
Fares & Visitor Tax
A "Miyajima Visitor Tax" (100 yen) is required in addition to the fare.
- One-way: ¥300 (Fare ¥200 + Tax ¥100)
- Round trip: ¥500 (Fare ¥400 + Tax ¥100)
Note: The Visitor Tax is collected only once per visit (usually included in the ticket price departing from Miyajimaguchi).
How to pay
- IC Cards (Suica, ICOCA, etc.): You can tap at the gate. The tax is automatically added.
- Cash: Buy a ticket at the vending machine. The tax is usually included in the price.

Important Notes
- If using Japan Rail Pass:
- The ferry fare is free, but the Visitor Tax is NOT included.
- You must buy a "Visitor Tax Ticket" (¥100) at the vending machine before boarding.
- If using IC Cards (Suica, ICOCA, etc.):
- The tax is automatically added when you tap the gate. (Total ¥300 for one-way).
- If using Credit Card (Matsudai Kisen only):
- You can use Contactless Payment (Touch) with your Credit Card at the gate.
Pass Restrictions: The 1,000-yen "1-Day Streetcar & Ferry Pass" is valid ONLY for Matsudai Kisen. The JR Pass is valid ONLY for JR Ferry.
World Heritage Sea Route
The "World Heritage Sea Route" is the most efficient and scenic way to travel between Hiroshima's two UNESCO World Heritage sites: the Atomic Bomb Dome and Itsukushima Shrine. This high-speed cruiser takes you from the Motoyasu River in the heart of the city directly to Miyajima Island in just 45 minutes, offering a unique perspective of Hiroshima from the water.

- Departure Point: Motoyasu-bashi Pier (located in Peace Memorial Park, near the Atomic Bomb Dome).
- Time/Cost: Approx. 45 minutes / Adult One-way ¥2,400 (Round trip ¥4,400).
