Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum

Overview: What is it?

This museum was established with the purpose of conveying the reality of the damage caused by the atomic bomb to the world and contributing to the abolition of nuclear weapons and the realization of lasting world peace. It exhibits artifacts and photographs of the victims, along with materials illustrating the state of Hiroshima before and after the bombing, making it one of the central facilities of the Peace Memorial Park.

The Story & Significance

The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, opened in 1955 (Showa 30), is the central facility of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. It plays a vital role as a "peace learning center" transmitting Hiroshima's wish for peace and recovery from the horrors of the atomic bombing to both domestic and international audiences. The Main Building was designed by Kenzo Tange. The museum continues to function not merely as a historical exhibition facility, but as a "living textbook" for peace education, upholding humanity's vow that "The mistake shall not be repeated.”
