Monument for the Teachers and Children of National Schools Who Died in the Atomic Bombing

Overview: What is it?

This monument offers solace to the children and teachers whose lives were taken by the atomic bomb, and simultaneously expresses the determination to advance peace education both now and in the future with the resolve that "The atomic bomb must never be tolerated a third time.”

The Story & Significance

As the war intensified, elementary school students in urban areas from the third grade and up were forcibly evacuated as part of air defense measures. The victims of the atomic bombing included first and second graders who were left with their families because they were too young, and older students who were mobilized for building demolition work for firebreaks.
